No lifter worth his weight in iron thinks his workouts are for the benefit of – or fuelled by – just his body. You know that with each rep, you’re training your muscle and your mind to be strong and powerful, and that you use both to achieve your desired results.
Whether you want to run faster, get stronger or look absolutely killer in a short skirt, your leg work probably takes up a big part of your time in the gym. Improve your pins with these pro tips!
How many times while growing up did my dad tell me, “Write it down!” How many times have I told myself the same thing? Answer to both: too many. Writing something down has proven to be an effective memorization technique.
We presume that government is at least as aware of the established health risks of smoking – for smokers and non-smokers – as any aware and enlightened human that there is already incontestable evidence from medical research of the link between Smoking and the Big Three: lung cancer, heart disease and chronic bronchitis. That the death rate for lung cancer is 1000 times higher for smokers than for non-smokers. That three out of four bronchitis deaths are caused by smoking (not air pollution, as is often believed). And that, in the age group 45-55, death rates from heart disease are 50 per cent higher for men smokers than for men non-smokers; and 100 per cent higher for women.
Oops it could happen anytime, anywhere, without advance warning, even to the fit, the active, and the healthy. A slip or a fall and – ouch – you’re landed (sometimes literally), with a fracture or a sprain. An expert orthopaedic surgeon outlines emergency procedures to help a victim until he can be got to a doctor.
Norman Cousins was diagnosed with a crippling and potentially fatal collagen disease. In response, Cousins undertook a regime that included plenty of vitamin C and positive emotions – including daily belly laughs that resulted from watching TV shows like The Three Stooges. To the surprise of many doctors, he made a full recovery.
How much protein do I need each day to see results? How much protein is too much? And how many grams of protein can my body assimilate in each meal?
Can you “walk off” your high blood pressure with an investment of just two hours a week? Read the results of this exciting new study…
The bones that form a joint are normally congruous and in apposition to each other. When this relationship is altered due to injury, it leads to a separation of these bones, called a dislocation. What you shouldn’t do is as important as what you should when someone has suffered a dislocation. Let’s discuss how to recognize when bones have gone astray, and the correct way to handle such an emergency.
We have all felt anxious at some time, whether we call it feeling uneasy, on edge or uptight. It is perfectly natural to feel anxious and, in fact, to some degree it can have good effects such as toning us up for a big match or sharpening awareness for interview or exam.
The prospect of living for a good long time loses its lustre for a lot of us when we consider the toll all those years can take on face. Luckily, in a kind of modern-day alchemy, researchers are blending romance with science to create products that prolong the look of youth. Part cosmetic, part pharmaceutical, “cosmeceuticals” promise, for example, to slow the accumulation of wrinkles on a woman’s face or to cement the bond between a man and his hair.
Chronic rheumatism can be said to have caused more human misery than all the wars fought since the beginning of time. Only a person who has had his body racked with the pain of chronic rheumatics can truly understand the truth of this statement. The dull throbbing pain that lingers day and night, intensifying during periods of cold and damp, is a mortal enemy of man and a direct product of modern man’s flight from nature. Improper diet, lack of sufficient sunlight and a body that has not been hardened by Nature’s agents are largely responsible for rheumatic conditions.
The disease cannot be cured until the cause is known and treated. Rarely is the cause of ulcers treated, but rather the effect; that hole in the stomach called an ulcer is doused with milk, cheese, drugs, etc., and then permitted to gouge itself out and start the same painful symptoms all over again.
The causes of headaches are many and it is always advisable to understand the root of all head pains before attempting to counteract them. Since such pains are Nature’s means of warning us of internal disturbances, it is unwise to attempt to treat the headache alone, but rather to understand its origin and treat both cause and symptom.
Among the most painful and dangerous of female disorders is the fibroid tumour of the uterus. In part, the danger is psychological rather than physical. The increased incidence of cancer together with a wide publicity campaign has made the public highly cancer-conscious. For this reason, the discovery of almost any tumour on the body will generally strike terror into the heart of the strongest person. Thus the relatively common fibroid tumour which attacks the uterus is often mistaken for a malignant tumour (cancer), and the resultant shock is almost as destructive as the growth itself.
Fatigue is not merely a matter of bodily wear and exertion. How many people do you know who constantly complain of fatigue though their regular day’s labour is not at all excessive? How many times have you found yourself suffering from exhaustion at a time when you were even less physically active than usual? Mind and body demand activity, and attention to one without exercise of the other may lead to exhaustion of both. I have known few people who maintain a well-balanced daily programme of mental and physical activity who suffered fatigue.
Your normal weight is dependent upon three factors: height, age and skeletal structure. Naturally the weight of the individual should alter through the several stages of life. And, quite as naturally, the amount and kind of food needed to maintain the proper weight will also vary, dependent upon the person’s occupation and general activity.
No pill has ever cured insomnia. No powder, capsule or tonic has ever brought permanent relief. Yes, sleep can be induced through drugs. Have you ever slept the sleep of the drugged? It is like having bought a small share of death. To awaken from it once is frequently a ghastly enough experience to turn you against the use of such drugs for ever. The dizzy, choking, numbing sensation that occurs to the awakening drugged sleeper is undoubtedly among the most horrifying of all human experiences. I cannot warn too severely against such devices.
This condition rarely exists where infection has been prevented from entering the body. Those who suffer from arthritis invariably carry a point of infection within their bodies other than, the joint area affected. By combating infection wherever it may arise, in teeth (gums), tonsils, bladder, kidneys, sinuses, appendix or others, you are protecting yourself against a future attack of arthritis.
There is a common practice today, among many physicians, to stamp anything which they cannot successfully diagnose, “allergy”. The reason for this is that so little is known about allergies that the diagnosis leaves plenty of room for discussion and explanation.
How important is mere appearance to a man? Well, a man can’t lie to himself – very important. A dermatologist takes a close look at the products and processes designed to make a man nice to be near to; and spell out the A-B-Cs of good grooming.
Nothing can make you feel old vulnerable more quickly than a seemingly and out-of-the-blue bad back. And if you know the feeling, it’s probably little comfort that four out of five adults will at some time share it.
Beware pets that can become health pests! Because if you give him an unwanted peck, he might give you Psittacosis. Whazzat? That’s another way of spelling ‘fatal attraction’… And while you’re about it, you might as well also watch out for (Ouch!) pussy’s claws, (Scratch, scratch!) leaping fleas, and (Eeeagh!) hairy-scary caterpillars…
“Healthy drinking” – sounds like a contradiction in terms? It need not be. Moderation and quality are the keys to successful imbibing!
Despite taking precautions like labelling poisonous chemicals and keeping them out of the sight and reach of children, chemical poisoning emergencies do arise. Let us prepare ourselves for the quick and decisive action that is called for.
If you’ve said that you’re like many other Americans who share a concern about the risk of coronary heart disease. But if you’ve never quite gotten around to doing something about it, keep reading. You’ll find answer to some of the most common questions that people have about cholesterol, and what you can do to control it. Happily, you’ll find that taking control of cholesterol is a lot easier and better tasting than you thought!
Wisdom, peace and fulfilment are all part of the ageing process. The passage of time does not mean the inevitable loss of mental power, sexual potency, physical attractiveness and energy. How badly and quickly you age depends on your genetic inheritance, diet, stress, lifestyle, pollution and you – your own mental attitude.
Weight loss is a short-lived change that is all too familiar to most of us. It’s no big deal getting people to lose weight. People lose millions of pounds every year. But only two to five per cent actually keep it off.
Convulsions, or to use a common, although distinctly un-medical term, “fits”, often result in well-meaning bystanders doing more damage than good owing to erroneous and outdated beliefs. Let us clear these misconceptions and watch out for the correct first-aid measures to be taken.
When drifting off is a struggle, it may seem like one of life’s greatest frustrations. It needn’t. In most cases, choices made during the day can have a big impact on whether going to sleep is a pleasure or a nightmare.
A diabetic treads a very delicate tight-rope as he tries to avoid both, a deficiency of insulin and an excess of it in the blood. Either of these eventualities could constitute a diabetic emergency. Let us discuss these critical extremes and look out for first-aid measures.
Doctors have shown that people who have satisfying hobbies are far less likely to suffer from stress. If you find a sport or hobby that you really enjoy then you will benefit enormously – both mentally and physically. This questionnaire is designed to enable you to find the activities that are right for you. Work your way through these questions and you’ll be led directly to a shortlist of possibilities.
Your nose is not merely an organ of smell. It’s a filter, a temperature controller, a passageway and sometimes even an alarm system. It is closely connected with your eyes, mouth, ears and head, both cosmetically and physically. So, when it is injured, to treat it you’ve got to look beyond your nose.
Overeating was initially treated purely as a physical or a hormonal problem. Then it was blamed of genes. For a long time no thought was given to finding its roots in one’s mind. However, in the second half of the last century it was thought about, studied and is now confirmed, that overeating is primarily a psyche-based problem.
Women have traditionally been regarded as the ‘weaker’ sex.
But it’s becoming clear that this is a myth – the average man may be taller and heavier than the average woman but when the chips are really down, it turns out that women are tougher. And here’s the evidence!
How to gain weight is a question not so often discussed as is the subject of reducing weight. Some persons cannot be made to gain a pound by any means of persuasion or suasion, while others find it hard not to keep continually on the upgrade. The latter are more fortunate in one respect — for their tendency can be controlled — they can be reduced if they try hard enough.
